20 Years of UJ, A Lifetime of Growth: My Journey, My Voice

As the University of Johannesburg celebrates two decades of transformation, I find myself reflecting on how its journey has shaped mine academically, personally, and in my goal to contribute meaningfully to the broader community. UJ is the dream of many. It is a place that leaves you looking back with a smile and wishing for just a little more time. I know I will be one of those people. Everyone who walks these halls, whether for a year or for a full degree, ends up wishing they could stay a little longer. This institution fuels with ambition, fills you with knowledge and surrounds you with inspiration. 

When I think of graduation season, I imagine a student proudly taking selfies with their family. That image alone stirs something deep within. And if that does not inspire you, I am not sure what will. For me, graduating from UJ is more than a personal milestone. It represents the university's enduring commitment to uplifting and empowering its community. It is a reminder that I am not just leaving with a qualification. I am leaving with purpose. And that, perhaps, is UJ's greatest gift to every student who passes through its gates

Twenty years of UJ is a celebration of development, resiliency, and change rather than merely a milestone (University of Johannesburg, 2024). Since its founding in 2005, UJ has grown to become one of the most forward-thinking universities in South Africa, welcoming students from a wide range of backgrounds (University of Johannesburg, 2024). These twenty years demonstrate UJ's dedication to removing obstacles to education, advancing opportunity, and fostering an inclusive culture (University of Johannesburg, 2023). The hundreds of graduates that UJ has produced people who are influencing businesses locally and internationally and giving back to their communities reflect the university's heritage (University of Johannesburg, 2022).

A Vision That Continues to Inspire 

More than just a significant event, UJ@20 stands for a daring vision based on educational access, technological advancement, and long-lasting social influence (University of Johannesburg, 2023). UJ has established an atmosphere where creativity flourishes and students are motivated to have greater dreams thanks to its commitment to excellence and transformation (University of Johannesburg, 2024). It is more than just an academic institution; it is a driving force behind the development of morally upright leaders and critical thinkers prepared to take on real-world problems (University of Johannesburg, 2023). UJ's legacy serves as a reminder to me when I think back on this journey that it is not just a place to learn but also a springboard for opportunity and advancement.

What UJ@20 Means to Me as a Student 

My Personal Growth

Thinking about what UJ at 20 means to me is harder to put into words than I expected. From everything I have seen and experienced, what stands out the most is how UJ has stayed true to its mission. Even when times were tough, the university kept moving forward, always adapting and staying focused. That has really taught me something important. It is not about how quickly you reach your goals, but about staying the course until you do. 

I will always be proud of being a student during UJ's 20th anniversary. The celebrations, the sense of unity, and the stories of transformation make me feel like I am part of something much bigger than myself. UJ is not just the place where I attend lectures. It is a space built on resilience, innovation, and a strong sense of purpose. Being part of that means a lot to me. For example, one of my dreams is to become a professional soccer player, UJ is giving me a platform through the UJ soccer internal league.

Personally, my dream of becoming a professional soccer player seem possible, because UJ internal soccer league has given me that opportunity to showcase my skills and talent. For me this is a start for greatness in my soccer career. 

Academic Growth 

Since joining UJ, I have grown in ways I never imagined. Academically, I have been challenged to think critically and communicate more effectively. As a Public Relations and Communication student, I have learned to engage with real-world issues and apply theory to practice skills that will serve me in my career and beyond. 

Giving Back: Community and Social Development 

One of the most powerful aspects of UJ is its strong commitment to community engagement. Through various initiatives, the university gives students like me opportunities to get involved and make a difference. Whether it is volunteering, organising events, or supporting outreach programmes, UJ teaches us that learning extends beyond the classroom.

UJ@20 is more than a celebration. It reflects transformation, inclusion, and purpose. For me, it marks a journey of growth from uncertainty to empowerment, from limited skills to confidence, from student to future professional. I am proud to be part of a university that not only educates but inspires. A place that prepares you not just for a job but for impact. 

As UJ moves forward, I hope it continues to expand opportunities, embrace innovation, and uplift communities. The future is bright, and I’m grateful to be walking this journey with UJ. OUR FUTURE. REIMAGINED.
